AI Scam App: Brothers Fight Voice-Cloning Fraud

Two brothers have launched an AI scam-protection app after their mother was targeted by voice-cloning fraud. The Savi Security app filters scam texts, screens voicemails, and can monitor live calls for signs of fraud. The inspiration came when their mother received a call that sounded exactly like their sister, Courtney, saying "Mom, I need help. Please do what they say." A man then demanded money via PayPal, claiming to have their daughter at a Walmart in Olathe, Kansas. It turned out to be a scammer using an AI voice clone and a spoofed phone number. Patrick and Ryan Coughlin, co-founders of Savi Security, started building the company about a year after this incident. The Savi app launched this month for iOS and Android, following a 7 million dollar seed round. Patrick Coughlin, the CEO, noted that AI is now being used as a powerful tool for deception. This development offers a new tool for consumers to combat the growing threat of digital fraud.
