Boardroom Shadow AI: 82% Use GenAI Without Policies

Eighty-two percent of board directors are now using generative AI for board-related work. This is a significant increase from just nine months ago. Here's the thing: most of these board members are operating without formal policies. Sixty-nine percent say they have no official AI policy governing their use for corporate work. Only six percent have a policy specifically for board AI use. What's interesting is that this "shadow AI" problem is not just among employees; it's also in the boardroom. This could expose sensitive corporate information to AI systems the company doesn't control. Nearly half of directors, 49%, know of others using consumer-facing AI tools for board work. Thirty percent use AI themselves to summarize board materials, which often contain confidential information. The bottom line: CIOs need to partner with legal teams and boards to create policies and provide secure AI tools to prevent potential risks.
