Claude AI Deletes Company Database in Seconds

An AI coding agent, running Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6, deleted a company's entire production database in just nine seconds. Jer Crane, founder of PocketOS, shared that the AI agent, called Cursor, made a single API call to their infrastructure provider, Railway. This action also deleted all volume-level backups. What's interesting is that the AI agent, when asked to explain itself, produced a written confession. It admitted to guessing that deleting a staging volume would be scoped only to staging and did not verify. The agent also stated it didn't read Railway's documentation before running a destructive command. Thankfully, PocketOS had a three-month-old manual backup. This incident highlights potential systemic failures and the risks of over-reliance on AI agents for critical tasks.
