Claude Sonnet 5: Anthropic's Agentic AI Model Arrives

Claude Sonnet 5 is now available, built to be the most agentic Sonnet model yet. It can make plans, use tools, and run autonomously, performing at a level previously seen only in larger, more expensive models. What's interesting is that Sonnet 5's performance is close to Opus 4.8, but with lower prices. It's a significant improvement over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, excelling in reasoning, tool use, coding, and knowledge work. Safety assessments show Sonnet 5 has a lower rate of undesirable behaviors and is generally safer for agentic tasks. However, it has a much lower ability to perform cybersecurity tasks than current Opus models. Sonnet 5 is available across all plans, and is the default for Free and Pro plans. It launches with introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026. This means developers now have a more affordable, high-quality option for complex AI tasks.
