Grok AI's Decline: Downloads Fall as ChatGPT & Claude Rise

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, is losing its initial momentum. Downloads have flattened sharply in recent months, while competitors like ChatGPT and Claude continue to grow rapidly. Grok downloads dropped to 8.3 million in April, a significant fall from over 20 million in January. This early surge was partly due to controversial features, like tools for virtually undressing people in photos, which went viral. These controversial features, which allowed for the creation of sexually explicit images, drew criticism and led to several countries temporarily restricting or banning Grok's image-generation features. Paid adoption for Grok remains low. Only 0.174% of surveyed American AI users and workers paid for Grok in Q2 2026, compared to over 6% for ChatGPT. Grok is also struggling in the enterprise sector, with only 7% of surveyed companies using or planning to use it. What's interesting is that as Grok struggles, Musk's SpaceX has signed a deal to provide computing capacity to rival AI firm Anthropic. This deal could generate billions for SpaceX and marks a shift from Musk's past criticisms of Anthropic. The bottom line is that Grok is facing significant challenges in a competitive AI landscape.
