Interactions API: Gemini's New Standard for AI Development

The Interactions API is now the primary interface for Gemini models and agents. This API, which launched its public beta in December 2025, has reached general availability. It offers new capabilities like Managed Agents, background execution, and tool improvements. Developers can now provision a remote Linux sandbox for agents and set `background=True` for asynchronous interactions. Tool results can return images alongside text. Other updates include Deep Research upgrades, media generation with Nano Banana 2 and Lyria 3, and a simplified schema. Cost and developer optimizations are also available through Flex and Priority tiers. The Interactions API is now the default for Google AI Studio and the Gemini API documentation. This matters because it sets the new standard for building applications with Gemini.
