Moonshot Kimi K3: China's AI Challenges Top US Models

Chinese startup Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3, a new AI model. This model has 2.7 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-weight large language model currently available. Moonshot AI claims K3 performs competitively with Anthropic's Fable 5, which is considered the most advanced AI model widely available. K3 also reportedly "substantially outperformed" Anthropic's Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol and GPT 5.5. On official benchmarks, K3 consistently ranks in the top three models. This release comes as global businesses are questioning the cost of models from other major AI developers. If K3's performance claims are true, it signals that Chinese developers can build open-weight systems in the same league as top U.S. models.
