OpenAI Codex in ChatGPT Mobile App: Coding On-the-Go

OpenAI has integrated its Codex coding assistant into the ChatGPT mobile app. This update allows developers to manage coding workflows directly from their smartphones. The new feature is available in preview mode for all ChatGPT subscription tiers on both iOS and Android. Codex, which launched about a year ago, does not run directly on the phone. Instead, the app acts as a link to a developer's preconfigured environment, like a Mac mini or a cloud workspace. This means all files and credentials stay securely on the machine where Codex is active. The app provides status notifications, screenshots, and allows users to input new prompts. Developers can review outputs, approve commands, and start new tasks from their mobile devices. OpenAI uses a "secure relay" to keep local machines accessible while protecting user identities. This allows developers to start a Codex task and receive alerts on their phone when input is needed. To use this, both the ChatGPT app and the Codex application on Macs need to be updated. Windows support is planned for the near future. This development allows developers more flexibility in managing their coding projects on the go.
