OpenAI vs. Anthropic: AI Revenue & User Growth Insights

OpenAI's ChatGPT leads in AI chatbot users, but Anthropic appears to be generating more annual revenue. This highlights different business models in the AI industry. IDC estimates ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly active users, far more than Google Gemini or Anthropic's Claude. OpenAI generates an estimated $30 billion to $40 billion in annualized revenue, with consumer subscriptions making up a portion of this. However, despite fewer users, Anthropic's annualized revenue is estimated between $40 billion and $50 billion. Most of Anthropic's revenue comes from enterprise and developer services, not consumer subscriptions. Counterpoint Research also found Anthropic captured a larger share of global large language model revenue in early 2026. This shows that user count doesn't always reflect a company's financial success in the rapidly evolving AI market.
