US AI Restrictions Boost Chinese AI Adoption & Market Share

The US government has restricted access to Antropic's latest AI models, leading Silicon Valley to quickly adopt Chinese alternatives like GLM-5.2. This model, released by AI, immediately ranked high in major AI model rankings. Five of the top ten popular AI models are now from Chinese companies. A major reason for this shift is cost. GLM-5.2 can be used for one-eighth the cost of Antropic's "Claude Opus 4.8" for some tasks. While US models may still lead in top performance, many companies prioritize cost-effectiveness. An investor noted that not everyone needs a Ferrari, suggesting companies want AI at a reasonable cost. GLM-5.2 is also open source, allowing users to operate and modify it on their own servers, significantly reducing API usage fees. US big tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon are already offering some Chinese AI models in the cloud. Experts say the AI technology gap between the two countries has narrowed significantly, now estimated at around six months, despite US export controls. This trend shows the growing global competition and accessibility in AI development.
